Introduction to Simulation

This page contains general information about the course "Introduction to Simulation", which usually takes place in the winter term. Information on the currently running course can be found here.

Summary

"Introduction to Simulation" (ItS) is a 2V+2Ü course held in the winter term at the Fakultät für Informatik of the Universität Magdeburg. It is worth 5 CP (for Bachelor and Master). "ItS" is a course designed to give students a basic knowledge of simulation and to provide them with first experience of using a simulation package. Some experience in programming and knowledge of first-year applied mathematics are recommended for this course.

The lectures (Vorlesungen) and practical classes (Übungen) will be in English.

Goals of the Course

  • To learn the basics of two important classes of simulation:
    • Discrete-event Monte-Carlo simulation,
    • Continuous simulation with ODEs
  • To learn to use the simulation software AnyLogic
  • To gain experience in solving engineering problems using simulation
  • To provide the basis for subsequent simulation courses, such as
    • Diskrete Simulation
    • Kontinuierliche Simulation
    • Simulation Project
    • Applied Discrete Modelling
    • Simulationssysteme

After completing this course, students will know the basics of simulation and modelling of both continuous and discrete systems. This prepares them for

  • Advanced courses
  • Internship (Praktikum)
  • Bachelorthesis
  • Masterthesis

in the field of Simulation.

ItS is thus designed to be a general entry to simulation studies in Magdeburg. Students planning to take simulation courses are strongly recommended to attend ItS.

  • Exercises and homework assignments will include both traditional-type questions and the practical use of a simulation tool to solve simulation problems.
  • This course is a prerequisite for the Simulation Project, which is offered in the summer term. Simulation Project can be used for Bachelor students as WPF FIN SMK or as a normal Wahlpflichtfach.
  • The course Introduction to Simulation can be used for the following modules / Die Lehrveranstaltung "Introduction to Simulation" entspricht folgenden Modulen:
